Edinburgh Mela Organiser Anna Freemantle blogs about the event
The mela gig is is 4th September 2011
This is my first year as the fashion show producer at the Edinburgh Mela Festival and I am excited for you all to see the final result.
It will be a mixture of cutting edge Asian bridal couture from up and coming Glasgow based fashion designer, Designs by Kanval, high fashion pieces by Edinburgh fashion design graduate duo Adil & Darota and some raw edge designs from postgraduate students at Edinburgh College of Art combining colours, fabrics, jewellery from all cultures.
I’ve been busy meeting with the individual designers to make sure they are briefed about the concept for the show and that they are comfortable with how their collection is featured.
My phone and emails have been overloaded with messages from modelling agencies from all over the country and just last week we held an open casting call looking for two local aspiring models to join our team of professionals.
It was a huge success and now the three chosen hopefuls have a chance to win modelling contracts with the country’s top agencies who will be attending this year’s show.
Besides working with the designers and models, part of my job is to co-ordinate with my stylist, Ian Tod, make-up artist (Ana Cruzalegui) and hair stylists (from Dickson Reid).
I have just come out of a meeting with the team for this year’s fashion show and they are briefed and ready to go, fully prepared to create the funky yet high fashion show that I envisaged.
The Edinburgh Mela is committed to involving the community in its programming and we have done just that with the fashion show.
Not only are we featuring local aspiring models, but I’ve also been busy attending the MA postgraduate show at the Edinburgh College of Art to approach some promising fashion design students, inviting them to showcase their collection in this year's show.
There is still a lot more to do. Next, a meeting to attend with the Festival’s production team to discuss lighting, staging, music etc - all the crucial technical factors which make a huge difference to the delivery of the show and help create that special aspect that leaves one wanting more.
Finally, watch out for our huge opening performance by the Glasgow Gospel Choir.
This year the fashion show has conjured up a truly delightful, creative feast, I look forward to seeing you there.
